Bradford City v Forest Green Rovers - Kian Scales urged to repeat performance

Bradford City have a focus on developing young players and having stepped up, with Conor Sellars, from academy to joint first-team manager this season, Mark Trueman understands that better than most.

Last week’s win over Colchester United was a landmark in that respect, Kian Scales scoring a stunning first senior goal.

Trueman’s only interest was in Scales following up his man-of-the-match performance at home to Forest Green Rovers today.

“We were more excited about being 1-0 up and maintaining that win,” he replied. “It’s more making sure Kian’s consistent for the rest of the game and it doesn’t affect his performance.

“Now he has to back it up with his next performance.”

If his approach is more pragmatic than sentimental, there are plenty of good reasons for all clubs, particularly lower down the pyramid, to develop talent.

“It’s more important with the Covid situation that you bring through your own players,” he argued. “The academy at Bradford is getting stronger and stronger and this season bringing five players through shows we’ve got quality. Stuart (McCall, the previous manager) gave these players opportunities and we are and it’s up to them players to take it.”
