Fraizer Campbell makes admission over Doncaster Rovers' 'fantastic' on-loan Huddersfield Town man Alfie May

Fraizer Campbell has weighed in on Huddersfield Town’s decision to loan Alfie May to Doncaster Rovers

Fraizer Campbell would have liked to have seen Alfie May stay at Huddersfield Town rather than head out on loan to Doncaster Rovers.

31-year-old May was a marquee signing for Huddersfield in the summer of 2025, joining after a goal-laden campaign at Birmingham City that ended with promotion from League One.

He scored seven goals across 40 appearances in his maiden Terriers campaign before he was allowed to join fellow League One outfit Doncaster on loan in the summer.

Fraizer Campbell on Alfie May

Ex-England international Campbell, who represented his hometown club Huddersfield between 2019 and 2022, has lauded May as a “fantastic footballer”.

He told BOYLE Sports, who offer the latest football odds: “As a frontman, there's always pressure on you. Alfie May is a fantastic footballer. Every time I saw him play, he looked sharp. Even when he was coming back from injuries, he played a few of the reserve games and he was at it.

“He scores goals in this league. It would have been nice to have them both around pushing each other, scoring goals together, but it's not how it is.

“Joe Taylor has got the pressure to handle, but sometimes as a forward, that's better. Sometimes you need that responsibility of being the man and everyone stroking your ego a little bit. Sometimes it brings the best out of players.”

Alfie May’s Doncaster Rovers reunion

May’s loan move reunited him with Rovers, who plucked him from the depths of non-league football in 2017. He spent three years with the club, eventually departing for Cheltenham Town in January 2020.

Since linking up with the South Yorkshire club for a second time, he has made eight appearances and scored two goals.

After putting pen to paper, the seasoned marksman said: “Coming back feels like home, it's a club that means a lot to me. They took me out of non-league and put me on a pathway and I never looked back.”
