'From personal experience' - Michael Duff assesses Huddersfield Town ahead of return with Wycombe Wanderers

Michael Duff has spoken fondly of Huddersfield Town ahead of his return to the club as head coach of Wycombe Wanderers.

The 48-year-old was appointed as Terriers boss in May 2024, tasked with overseeing a promotion tilt following relegation to League One.

He lasted less than a year at the helm, being shown the door in March 2025 with the club’s charge losing momentum at an alarming rate.

Duff is now in charge of Huddersfield’s League One counterparts Wycombe and will be back at the Accu Stadium this afternoon (April 11).

Michael Duff’s assessment of Huddersfield Town

Speaking to BBC Sport Three Counties, he said: “[Huddersfield are a] big football club. From personal experience, I really enjoyed it. Great facilities, supporters are great, big club.

“We were frustrated and disappointed when we came out because we thought, well we knew, we were doing a good job based on the squad that we had. But obviously people make decisions in football that you’re not in control of.

“They had a really, really bad end to last season, spent a lot of money with the new manager, really, really went for it, and it hasn’t quite worked out. The time that I had, the people that were there, the supporters, were really good with me.”

Seeing old faces

Jon Worthington saw out the remaining fixtures in the 2024/25 campaign before Lee Grant was recruited as Duff’s permanent successor.

There was no shortage of transfer market ambition from the Terriers after Grant’s arrival, but it has not yielded success on the pitch.

Grant was axed in January and replaced by Liam Manning, who is currently on compassionate leave. Duff will be coming up against the team of Martin Drury and Jon Stead, Huddersfield’s co-interim bosses.

Duff said: “We’ll go back there, obviously we’ll be trying to win the game but it’ll be good to see some old faces.

“They’ll be disappointed with the season that they’ve had I’m sure, particularly with the money they spent in the summer. But it’ll be a difficult game. They need to win.”
