'You have to' - Hull City sent transfer message regarding Leeds United's Joe Gelhardt

An ex-Leeds United midfielder has weighed in on the future of Joe Gelhardt after his Hull City loan spells

Hull City have been urged to re-sign Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United following their promotion to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old was first borrowed by the Tigers in January 2025 and helped the East Yorkshire outfit stave off relegation to League One.

He returned later in the year for a season-long loan spell and his 15-goal haul helped Hull seal promotion via the Championship play-offs.

Gelhardt, who can play up front, out wide or as an attacking midfielder, has not travelled with Leeds for their pre-season tour of the USA.

Joe Gelhardt verdict delivered

Former Leeds midfielder Jody Morris believes Hull should look to get ‘Joffy’ back on board and thinks the Tigers will be eyeing a permanent deal.

He told BOYLE Sports, who offer the latest football odds: “Whenever you have successful loan players and you are able to keep them, you should. Joe Gelhardt has played in the Premier League before.

“Making loans successful is something you have to grab with both hands because you already know how the player performs at the club.

“When you sign a new player, you never know if they will hit the ground running. Since he has already performed, I imagine Hull are trying to make him their player permanently.”

Joe Gelhardt’s career path

Gelhardt joined Leeds from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2020 and initially starred for the Whites at youth level.

He eventually moved into the senior set-up and enjoyed some bright Premier League cameos during Marcelo Bielsa’s reign.

The former England youth international struggled to build upon early promise and does not appear to have a future at Elland Road.

His previous exposure to England’s top flight could prove tempting to the Tigers, who could have a fierce battle for Premier League safety on their hands.

Morris said: “It was a surprise to everyone that they managed to get promoted last year, and fair play to the manager and owner for that.

“They are more up against it than Ipswich and Coventry, but we've seen surprises before. Watch this space.”
