Exclusive:Gordon Strachan encourages Scotland to consider 'hungry' Hull City star Oli McBurnie with World Cup looming

Gordon Strachan has encouraged Scotland to consider a recall for Hull City talisman Oli McBurnie.

The Leeds-born frontman is eligible to represent Scotland via his grandparents and has been capped by the Tartan Army on 17 occasions.

However, nearly five years have passed since he last made an appearance on the international stage.

After a relatively low-key season in Spain with Las Palmas, McBurnie returned to England last summer and has since been in excellent form.

Since making the move to Hull, he has registered 14 goals in 27 appearances across all competitions.

He struggled to endear himself to the Scotland faithful during his last run in the squad but former Scotland boss Strachan believes he would be a “real asset” for Steve Clarke’s side.

Gordon Strachan on Oli McBurnie

Speaking to The Yorkshire Post via Covers.com soccer betting, he said: “I’ve always been a fan of Oli McBurnie since watching him at Scotland Under-21s training.

“I watched him and John McGinn train and they were both the standout performers amongst the rest of the youngsters.

“Oli is a hungry footballer and when he’s driven to win, he’s a brilliant player and tough to stop if you’re a defender, so I see no reason why Scotland wouldn’t take him back into the squad.

“I’d feel confident knowing he’d give the opposition a great game as I think centre-backs get off lightly these days, considering most teams only play with one striker. He’s an effective free-kick taker too, so he’s got a long going for him and I think he’d still be a real asset to the national team.”

Oli McBurnie’s career path

McBurnie started his career with Bradford City, eventually catching the eye of Swansea City and moving to Wales in 2015.

His exploits with the Swans convinced Sheffield United to fork out £20m for his signature in 2019. The forward spent five years at Bramall Lane, scoring 29 goals in 159 appearances before heading to Las Palmas.

Scotland boss Clarke has some big decisions to make in the coming months, with the country having qualified for this summer’s World Cup.

McBurnie is hoping to fire Hull to promotion from the Championship and a World Cup call-up would be quite the cherry on top.
