Premier League panel confirm ruling on incident involving Leeds United's Jayden Bogle in Brentford draw

A Premier League panel have assessed an incident from Leeds United’s draw with Brentford

Brentford should have been awarded a penalty in their 1-1 draw with Leeds United last month, a Premier League panel have ruled.

The Whites hosted the Bees on August 30 and the spoils were shared after Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelled out Kevin Schade’s opener.

Brentford, however, felt they should have been given a chance to double their lead from the penalty spot. Jayden Bogle stood on the boot of Schade in the 66th minute and the contact was deemed to be sufficient for a spot-kick to be awarded.

Premier League panel ruling

The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel came to a 4:1 vote on the matter, but also felt it was not a clear and obvious error that required VAR correction.

The panel noted: “The panel felt that a penalty should have been awarded for a foul by Bogle on Schade, 4:1. There was foot on foot contact instigated by Bogle with enough contact for a penalty kick.

“However, given the high threshold for VAR intervention, the panel felt the referee's call should remain onfield as it wasn't a clear and obvious error, 3:2.”

Daniel Farke’s view

Leeds struggled to find their flow against Brentford and the panel ruling will only reinforce the widely-held belief they were somewhat fortunate to grab a point.

Post-match, Whites manager Daniel Farke said: “It's hardly possible to outperform Brentford in this terms, it's the only team next to us who can deliver this.

“Then it's more like to find technical solutions, to find bravery, to find football solutions and calm them down a bit. They were doubting if they invest enough.

“It was no, no, we have to play better football, we need to find better football solutions. Of course, more fight is always good, but if it's just about mentality then mentality teams will always win the league. It's not just this.

“We needed good football solutions and we definitely found better solutions in the second half.”
