Southampton's Ben Brereton Diaz 'due' for Sheffield United medical despite Stoke City and Derby County links
Sheffield United appear to have won the race to sign a former Blades loan star
Sheffield United have reportedly won the race to sign Ben Brereton Diaz on loan from Southampton.
The 27-year-old is back at St Mary’s having spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Derby County, registering eight goals across 41 appearances.
He has made two appearances for the Saints in the early stages of the campaign, but has been tipped for another loan exit.
Sheffield United ‘win race’
Sheffield United have been strongly linked having previously had the forward on loan twice, in 2024 and 2025. Derby are also said to be keen on a reunion and Stoke City have been credited with interest.
Reports suggested the aforementioned trio had seen loan offers accepted, putting the ball firmly in Brereton Diaz’s court.
According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Sheffield United have marched into the lead in the race to land the Chile international.
He is said to be due in South Yorkshire for a medical ahead of the third loan move to Sheffield United of his career.
Posting on X, O’Rourke said: “Understand Sheffield United have won the race for Southampton attacker Ben Brereton Diaz.
“The Chile international is due for a medical at Bramall Lane today. Derby and Stoke were also in for Brereton Diaz.”
Sheffield United’s transfer market moves
Brereton Diaz boasts a wealth of Championship experience and would add some much-needed firepower to the Sheffield United attack.
Chris Wilder’s men are yet to get off the mark with goals in the league having played out goalless draws with Birmingham City and Swansea City.
Brereton Diaz made 34 appearances across his two loan spells at Bramall Lane, weighing in with 10 goals.
Sheffield United need to strengthen before the summer transfer window closes and have also been credited with interest in Hull City defender Cody Drameh.
The window is due to close at 11pm on Tuesday (September 1) and only free agents will be available to the Blades beyond that point.
