Exclusive:'New structures take time' - Sheffield Wednesday fans issued League One warning by finance expert

Finance expert Dr Dan Plumley has assessed Sheffield Wednesday ahead of their return to League One

Sheffield Wednesday fans have been warned they may need to temper expectations ahead of their return to League One.

Arise Capital Partners completed a long-awaited takeover of the South Yorkshire club earlier this year, pulling the Owls out of administration.

They have since whet the appetite for third-tier football with plenty of transfer market ambition, funding nine new additions to Henrik Pedersen’s squad despite financial constraints.

Among those to have been recruited are Owls legend Barry Bannan and exciting attackers Louie Barry and Harry Gray.

Finance expert issues Sheffield Wednesday warning

However, speaking to The Yorkshire Post via Unibet casino online, finance expert Dr Dan Plumley has warned supporters against getting carried away.

Dr Plumley, of Loughborough University, said: “Steadying the ship is important now, so expectations may have to be tempered somewhat. The club’s debt position will be wiped out and a new company formed, but the way forward for Sheffield Wednesday should not be to follow the previous owner’s path, running up heavy losses and big wage bills.

"As such, a season of consolidation might not be a bad thing. The whole club has effectively been reset, and new structures take time to emerge and grow. It will also be a completely new team and squad on the pitch, and the fans might need to be patient.

“A positive start could see a tilt for the top six, and it is likely that the new owners are aiming high in internal conversations, but for most Wednesday fans, they are just happy to have their club back and are looking forward to talking more about on-field matters than off-field chaos in 2026/27."

Revenue opportunities

Wednesday may be operating under financial constraints but a club of such stature can open up lucrative revenue opportunities.

Dr Plumley believes the Owls could even come close to reaching the revenue figure they attained during the 2023/24 season, which they spent in the Championship.

He said: “Even with the financial constraints, Sheffield Wednesday will certainly be one of the biggest in the league in revenue terms, and you would imagine the Sky Sports cameras will want to show some of their games where there is an opportunity, which would further boost revenue.

“The difference in revenue from the Championship to League One can be around £7-10m, depending on the club, but Wednesday have some positives on their side in this regard with a loyal and large fanbase and new owners that are aggressively pursuing commercial strategies to drive up revenue.

“It is not inconceivable that the club could get close to their 2023/24 Championship revenue figure in League One if several good commercial deals can be executed and matchday revenue stays strong.”
