West Ham United 'weighing up' transfer swoop for former Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur man

West Ham United are reportedly weighing up a move to sign Leeds United academy graduate Jack Clarke from Sunderland.

Leeds initially appeared to have conducted shrewd business when they pocketed a reported £10m for the sale of Clarke to Tottenham Hotspur in 2019. A loan move back to Elland Road proved unsuccessful and subsequent spells with Queens Park Rangers and Stoke City also underwhelmed.

However, Sunderland have managed to unlock Clarke’s potential and he has seen his stock soar over the course of the last two years. A key figure for the Black Cats, he has scored 27 goals in 112 appearances for the club.

His exploits do not appear to have gone unnoticed and speculation regarding his future has been rife since last summer. According to Football Insider, West Ham hold concrete interest in the former England youth international.

The Hammers are said to be weighing up a move for Clarke, who has reportedly turned down a new deal at the Stadium of Light. Reports have suggested West Ham are keen to recruit homegrown talent and York-born Clarke would fit the bill.

Southampton, who are back in the Premier League after a season away, have also been linked with the 23-year-old.

Clarke enjoyed a rapid rise up the Leeds youth ranks before bursting on the scene under Marcelo Bielsa. He quickly caught attention with his direct nature and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations. The winger made a total of 28 appearances for the club, notching twice.
