Yorkshire Inter District Union: Bradford 19 Leeds 17

Bradford held off a Leeds fightback in the singles to win 19-17 at Keighley in the third series of Yorkshire Inter District Union fixtures.

The hosts held an 8-4 advantage from the foursomes, but Selby’s Rob Wardle got Leeds off to the start they needed in the singles by beating Bingley St Ives’ Terry Brushwood in the opening match.

However, Bradford won four and halved three of the next seven matches to get over the line.

Bingley St Ives’ Dane Bairstow and clubmate Brushwood got their first foursomes win of the season, after a half and a one-hole loss, while Clayton’s Chris Foster and Rob Malloy (Northcliffe) won for the second match in succession, as did Jack Hall (South Bradford) and Cleckheaton’s Martin Gaffney.

Wakefield’s Neil Kinghorn had a new foursomes partner in clubmate Scott McGregor and they won handsomely for Leeds, 6&4.

Horsforth pairing Sean Ryan and Liam Bennett were both making their first appearance of the season and got the visitors’ other morning points, winning 5&4.

Malloy is still unbeaten in singles after defeating McGregor 5&4 while Gaffney is two from two having edged out Wike Ridge’s Barry Hardcastle by one hole and Hall likewise having bested Cookridge Hall’s Jez Howarth 5&3.

Wardle has two wins from two singles appearances for Leeds after his defeat of Brushwood, while Bingley St Ives’ Jack Laybourne became the first player to deny Kinghorn victory this season when they halved.

Sand Moor’s Paul Croft, playing for only the second time for Leeds, made it six points from a possible eight by beating Northcliffe’s James Darcy by two holes.

Wike Ridge’s Matty Brighton produced a crushing 6&4 win over Foster while Bennett and Ryan gained some personal consolation in defeat as each added singles triumphs to their foursomes success.

Bennett defeated Skipton’s Chris Payne by one hole and Ryan beat John Ellison, also Skipton, 4&3.
