Yorkshire golf: Steve Whitwham leads Harrogate to YIDU victory over Teesside

STEVE WHITWHAM took over the dual role of player-captain as Harrogate triumphed 22-14 against Teesside at Middlesbrough in the Yorkshire Inter-District Union League.

Although regular captain Kevin Ward was absent, Harrogate's playing ranks were strengthened by the return of the Ilkley pair, Jack Lampkin and Chris Atkins.

Nathan Seal, Harrogate Union's junior captain, was also in their line-up.

The morning foursomes were a tense affair with both sides winning two matches while two were halved.

Ed Cowan and Atkins won the top match two up, and the Rudding Park duo of Phil Kitching and Whitwham triumphed 3&2.

Lampkin and Dan White, and Scott Brown with Nathan Seal, gained a point each from their games.

In the afternoon singles Yorkshire county player Lampkin won the top match convincingly, 5&4, and Atkins followed up with a 3&2 victory.

Harrogate then took firm control of the match by winning the three middle singles through Jason Taylor and Dan White, who both won 3&2, and Lee Pedal, who produced 7&6 verdict.

Teesside briefly rallied by winning the next two matches, but Harrogate rubber-stamped their victory by winning the three remaining rubbers.

Seal and Brown both won 4&3 and it was left to captain Whitwham to end a superb day for Harrogate, winning 3&2, to make the singles score 16-8 in his side's favour.

The win moved Harrogate up to third place in the league table with 5pts, one behind leaders Sheffield and second-placed York.
