When is Wimbledon 2021? Dates of the tennis tournament, ticket information and if fans will be allowed in
The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has confirmed the Grand Slam will go ahead in 2021, with the world’s best players set to grace the grass courts of SW19 once more.
Let’s take a look at when the tournament will take place, if fans will be allowed in and how to follow the action in what promises to be an action-packed summer for tennis.
When will Wimbeldon take place in 2021?
The Championships at Wimbledon is one of four Grand Slam tournaments in the tennis calendar, alongside the Australian Open, French Open and US Open.
In 2021, Wimbledon will take place over two weeks at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club between 28 June and 11 July.
Will fans be allowed into Wimbledon 2021?
It remains a hot topic of discussion for many organisers and sports events around the world, with fans keen to return to witness the action live.
The LTA, the governing body of tennis in Great Britain, remains “cautiously optimistic” that fans will be able to attend the championships in 2021.
“Whilst it remains too early to say what level of attendance will be possible, the LTA is planning for a number of scenarios and remains cautiously optimistic that fans will be able to be present at all its summer events this year,” an LTA statement read.
The organisation is working closely with the government and the appropriate authorities to provide a “safe environment for players, officials, volunteers, and spectators”.
The statement also outlined the LTA’s intention for Wimbledon and the other grass court events to take place in 2021, even if they have to be held behind closed doors due to Covid.
How can I get Wimbledon 2021 tickets?
Due to the uncertainty around if spectators will be able to attend the tournament, tickets are yet to be released for the 2021 championships.
Organisers are working on three scenarios - a full capacity Wimbledon, a reduced capacity championships, and the tournament being held behind closed doors - with focus on limited numbers attending.
Those who had tickets for the 2020 tournament can expect further information in the coming weeks but it seems unlikely that there will be the queues at SW19 which many have come to expect each year.
What TV channel is showing Wimbledon 2021?
The BBC has a long association with Wimbledon and the broadcaster is expected to show live coverage of the championships in full once again in 2021.
It has been 84 years since the BBC’s first television show broadcast from Wimbledon, which aired on 21 June 1937 - 10 years after the first radio broadcast.
What other tennis events will take place?
In the run up to Wimbledon there will be four grass court tournaments staged with or without fans in attendance, say the LTA.
Those events begin with the Nottingham Open on 5-13 June, Birmingham Classic from 12-20 June, Queen’s the week of 14-20 June and the Eastbourne International on 19-26 June.
Wimbledon - the crown jewel in the British grass court summer - is scheduled to take place between 28 June and 11 July before the British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships on 20-25 July.
