Yorkshire Leagues: Cummins and Knight help Wickersley maintain pressure

Not even the calculator could separate Appleby Frodingham and Wakefield Thornes in their Yorkshire South Premier top-of-the-table encounter.

Appleby Frodingham needed a battling half-century from 
No 9 Alex Grimes to help them to 171. With rain breaks cutting the game short, Thornes were set a target of 83 to win and even though 30 from David Toft looked to have swung the game their way, they finished tied on 82-4.

With Wesley Marshall going strong on 43 not out and third-placed Cleethorpes on 82-2, they looked set to overtake Barnsley’s 145-7 when rain ended play. Barnsley owed their total to a seventh-wicket stand of 89 between Ali Jahangir (29no) and James Booth (57).

Wickersley OV kept up the pressure on the leaders with a three-wicket home win over Whitley Hall. Callum Bethel (41) helped the visitors recover from 13-2 to 172 with Iftikhar Afzal taking 4-30. Bethel and Pieter Swanepoel each picked up three wickets but Wickersley got home after Mark Cummins (35) and Thomas Knight (53) put on 88 for the second wicket.

Three wickets each for Stephen Foster, Muhammad Attari and Greg Norton bowled out Sheffield & Phoenix United for 118 but Treeton were thwarted by the rain.

Maurice Chambers (3-18) and Josh Coulson (4-21) skittled bottom side Rotherham for 80 and Adam Whiteley (34no) saw Aston Hall to a comfortable nine-wicket win.

David Foster (4-35) and Nick Taylor (3-17) dismissed Castleford for 64 to give Harrogate a 136-run win and keep them at the top of Yorkshire Premier North.

York are hot on their heels after a narrow win over Yorkshire Academy. A second-wicket stand of 98 between Duncan Snell (60) and Liam McKendry (56) saw York set a target of 199-7. Academy No 3 Mosun Hussain (65) battled to the end but with Ryan McKendry taking 5-52, the visitors came up 13 short of victory.

That allowed Sheriff Hutton Bridge to replace Academy in third after they edged a thriller at home to Stamford Bridge.

Adam Fisher (100) and Louis Foxton (62) starred in the home side’s 292-6 which was reduced to 181 by Duckworth Lewis. A second-wicket partnership of 195 between Stuart Boyle and Will Rhodes, who each finished with 105, gave Stamford Bridge a solid start but the home side clinched victory by nine runs.

Darren Harland (70) and James Pick (61) helped Scarborough to 241-5. Despite losing their first wicket without scoring, Acomb eased to a four-wicket win thanks to Andy Tute (54) and Joe Dale (94).

Charlie Hodgson hit 13 fours in making 75 in Hull’s 171 in which Steve Burdett and Josh Jackson each took four wickets. Woodhouse Grange fell just short of the revised target of 103.

Sam Drury (63) and Danny Broumpton (72no) shared a century stand in Driffield’s 228-6 and James Hopper took 5-30 to topple Dunnington, despite the efforts of captain Jack Bolam (69).

Every single Bradford Premier fixture failed to finish.

A patient 60 not out from David Clow saw Bradford & Bingley to 123-5 against leaders Pudsey St Lawrence, while a second-wicket stand of 90 between Simon Lambert (48) and Mark Lawson (61) saw New Farnley reach 150-5 at Hanging Heaton before play stopped.

Josh Wheatley took 5-44 as Morley fell for 186 with James McNichol making 56. Pudsey Congs were 125-2 at the close.

In the Huddersfield League, Louis Aspeling (54) and Craig Ruscoe (62) took Golcar to 210-9 and Steve Whitwam (5-40) pegged Shepley five runs short of a revised 186 target despite Tom Denton’s 86.

Skelmanthorpe looked set to end Delph & Dobcross’s charge but a rain break with them on 209-5 chasing 247, and a 5-55 spell from Shakir Muhamad, swung things. Mike Kitson (83) was out on the resumption and they were dismissed for 222.

S P Singh (53no) led Hoylandswaine past Barkisland’s 234-6 in which Alex Scholfield scored 98 not out.

Only two games finished in Aire Wharfe’s top flight, Richard Brook (59no) and Jason Wright (62no) steering Burley past Collingham’s 142 in which Nick Brook took 5-42.

Andy Carson (54) and Larry Audain (4-34) helped North Leeds to an 85-run win over Bilton.
