Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann reveals cancer scare last year and provides perspective amid bad times

DONCASTER Rovers manager Grant McCann has revealed that perspective is close to hand amid some difficult times as a football manager this season - after revealing that he had successful treatment to cure skin cancer last December.

McCann and Rovers are enduring a testing start to the campaign, but McCann has stressed that the pressure is all relative, more especially given what he experienced towards the end of last year.

McCann said: "If I want to talk about pressure, I think (about) the pressure that came on me around Christmas time last year when the doctor came to see me at the training ground to tell me I had a malignant melanoma, which is skin cancer. That's pressure.

"Fortunately, I am okay now. But I possibly could have had five to six weeks to live.

"Every day we come in, we come to try and improve the football club and come and try to improve the players. Every day we come in, we want to try and push this club closer to the top six.

"We haven't started the season well in terms of results. But as I said in my tweet (earlier this week), nothing is won or lost in September.

"We know that we've come through bad spells in previous years when we have galvanised everybody and moved up this table and I have firm belief that we will do it again.

"Last year, we won five of the first seven and everybody thought we were going to win the league. Football works in mysterious ways and pressure for me is making sure I am okay and my family is all right.

"When I come in here, I want to come in with a smile on my face. I do it nearly every single day and I want the players to improve and this football club to grow and get back to the level where I know it can do.

"If it's this year, then great, if it's happens to be next year, then we will wait for that and do it then.

"But we are striving and pushing every single day and I don't want anyone outside to think we are not. I make mistakes, the players make mistakes, but we don't do it out of anything other than trying our best."
