Martin Drury 'frustrated' after Huddersfield Town end dismal League One season with rout of AFC Wimbledon

Martin Drury delivers his verdict on Huddersfield Town’s 4-0 dismantling of AFC Wimbledon

Huddersfield Town ended their campaign with a 4-0 rout of AFC Wimbledon - but co-interim boss Martin Drury was left frustrated.

It has been a dismal season for the Terriers, who have again fallen short of pre-season expectations and missed out on a place in the League One top six.

However, they ended the season on a high note by dismantling Wimbledon on the road. Alfie May bagged a brace and Lasse Sorensen and George Sebine got in on the act at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Martin Drury ‘frustrated’ by Huddersfield Town

Drury said: “The performance was good. I’m pleased for the supporters travelling down that they were able to watch something and drive back up north with four goals and a clean sheet.

“I’m frustrated that it’s the last game of the season when we do that. I do think that performance was much more like the first five games we had than the sixth game against Mansfield.

“First off, we know what wasn’t right before that. As I said before, I think we attack teams really, really well.

“We create lots of chances, score lots of goals, but then we’re questioned on game management and keeping clean sheets.

“I felt today, hopefully, we’ve demonstrated what it can look like in terms of scoring four goals and keeping a clean sheet. But again, albeit not getting too carried away, it’s the last game of the season and the pressure’s off. But that being said, I am pleased with how the players went about it today.”

Johnnie Jackson’s verdict

Dons boss Johnnie Jackson, meanwhile, said: “The performance, it was not very good; they were miles better than us, and they deserved to win the game.

“Right this second, I am not the slightest bit bothered by that. Obviously, last week was what we needed. We got the result that we needed, and that completely took the pressure off for this week.

“As hard as you try, the preparation, the mindset, everything changes because the lads know that they have got over the line. You want to go out with a win, of course, we tried that, but I think we saw pretty early on in the game that the motivation levels from either side were different, and it showed on the pitch.

“They have good players, that can happen on these final days, better that it happened today when we are already safe than last week.

“Everyone who has something to do with Wimbledon would have taken staying up this season, so to do it with a game to spare meant we could enjoy it together. Regardless of the result, I think today is a day of celebration for the football club.”
