Hull City - Video Review of the Tigers' 2025-26 Championship season

HAVING just escaped relegation to League One on the final day of the previous season, Hull City were not many peoples’ favourites for earning promotion to the Premier League 12 months on. What a difference a year makes.

Having sacked Ruben Selles, the manager who had kept them up on goal difference at the end of the 2024-25 campaign, and replaced him with a man – Sergej Jakirovic – who had never experienced English football previously, there were fears 2025-26 would bring more of the same at the MKM Stadium.

Throw in a handful of transfer embargoes and it was obvious why a promotion push was not on anybody’s radar.

But Bosnian Jakirovic proved an inspired appointment, as did the addition of several key players – some of who – including Oli McBurnie – had experience of getting out of the Championship.

Having almost blown their play-off spot with a six-game winless streak near the end of the regular Championship season, the Tigers did what they needed to in order to make the post-season, before seeing off Millwall in the play-off semi-finals before edging out Middlesbrough in the Wembley final.

The YP’s chief football writer Stuart Rayner casts an eye back over a memorable campaign for Hull, as well as pointing out what needs to be done in the coming weeks in order to make their Premier League return a positive one.
