Sheffield Wednesday 'open talks' with ex-Everton and Stockport County midfielder Tyler Onyango

Sheffield Wednesday are said to have opened talks with a former Everton and Stockport County midfielder

Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly opened talks over a potential deal for free agent midfielder Tyler Onyango.

The 23-year-old recently linked up with the Owls as a trialist having been released by Premier League club Everton at the end of last season.

He is known to Wednesday’s sporting director Simon Wilson, who oversaw the loan signing of the midfielder twice at Stockport County.

A former England youth international, Onyango has endured an injury-plagued chapter in his career but is now looking for a new challenge.

Sheffield Wednesday ‘open’ talks over midfielder

According to The Wednesday Word, talks over a potential contract at Hillsborough have been opened.

There may be reservations over the midfielder’s injury record, but he could prove to be a low-risk addition as a free transfer signing.

He could also add depth to Henrik Pedersen’s midfield, with a swoop for Wrexham’s George Dobson not said to be on the cards despite reports of advancing talks.

Tyler Onyango profile

Last year, when Onyangon joined Stockport for a second loan spell at Edgeley Park, the club’s then-CEO Simon Wilson said: “We are delighted to welcome Tyler back to the club.

“We have had to be patient as Everton have needed him with their first team, but that is terrific experience for Tyler which he can bring into his time with us.

“We know he is a versatile player and we believe he can positively contribute to the team in several ways. The last time around it was cut short through injury, but I think we all saw the potential. We are looking forward to working with him again.”

His then-Stockport boss Dave Challinor, meanwhile, said: “His athleticism, pace, power and ability to play in numerous positions will be invaluable to us and, importantly, he already knows us and knows what we’re about.”
