Why Hull City must slim 30 players down to 25 this week
When the 2026 summer transfer window closed at 11pm on Tuesday, Hull City had a problem on their hands.
Eighteen new signings, six on deadline day and five after 10pm, left a 34-man squad at the close of play. Only 25 players over the age of 21 can be registered to play in the Premier League in the rest of 2026.

Although not made public yet, a decision had to be reached on Thursday, though Hull could hedge their bets and name fewer than 25, adding more as they needed them.
The good news is that four of this summer's signings, Lucas Herrington, Christos Mouzakitis, Robinio Vaz and Jens Hjerto-Dahl, were born before 2005, so that leaves 30 to be whittled down to five.

Of that 30, 12 are not classed as "home-grown" and no more than eight players of that type are allowed on the list.
Hull faces the prospect of paying those who do not make the cut to not play and after a summer in which they came dangerously close to breaking financial fair play rules, that makes no sense.
All is not lost. Some transfer windows are still open, including in Croatia, where coach Sergej Jakirovic has plenty of contacts (until Monday), Saudi Arabia (12th), Argentina (13th), Greece and Portugal (15th) and most significantly, perhaps, Turkey's deadline is Friday.
It would be no surprise if the likes of Darko Gyabi, Oscar Zambrano, David Akintola, Kieran Dowell and Abdulkadir Omur's agents were encouraged to look into moves.

Matt Crooks, John Egan (both two years), Mohamed Belloumi, Charlie Hughes, Oli McBurnie and Regan Slater (all three) should all be safe, having signed new contracts on Thursday evening. In each case the club can extend them by 12 months.
Jakirovic says he is happy with Hull’s work, which has furnished him with a lot of players under the age of 25, most of whom are new to English football but full of potential.
"I'm pleased because we have worked very hard these last two months,” he commented.
"We had always our plan to bring quality so that we can improve our team. But don't forget also we lost 12 players from last season, so we needed these players.
"They are very good, potential, young, what we are looking for, hungry, ambitious. I will try to improve them and also I think in the future they will be a great benefit for our club.
"We have in every position at least two players, so you know how difficult the season is. We already lost some players because of injury, so we will try always to put the best XI (out).
"But no matter who will start in the game, for me it's very important who will finish the game so that we have options there, we can change our shape, system and also they can bring quality. For every head coach it's a good situation.
"Especially after two victories at the start of the season, they started to call us, agents and the players.
“We are always trying to bring better players than what we have.
"Now my job is to find a good balance between new arrivals and old players."
