Yorkshire weather: New yellow weather warning issued for Yorkshire for this weekend

Fresh weather warnings have been issued for large parts of Yorkshire this weekend - after the county largely escaped major disruption caused by Storm Goretti.

The yellow weather warning is in place from 2am to 3pm on Sunday (Jan 11), with The Met Office warning of possible travel delays due to snow and ice.

The warning covers the Yorkshire coast from Middlesbrough down to Scarborough, and also large parts of West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and some parts of South Yorkshire.

However, the warning does not cover other major areas such as York, Hull and Doncaster.

Temperatures are set to continue at around freezing until the weekend, although they are set to rise significantly into next week, with Leeds seeing highs on 10C on Monday.

It comes as much of the south of the country reels from major disruption caused by Storm Goretti. Some areas of Sheffield were badly affected, but much of Yorkshire escaped unscathed.

Storm Goretti continues to batter the UK with tens of thousands of Britons across the country facing widespread power cuts, travel disruption and school closures.

It comes after the wild, wintry weather brought 99mph winds while a rare red warning was issued by the Met Office for “dangerous, stormy” winds in the South West.

More than 45,000 properties were without power in the South West just before 9am on Friday, according to the National Grid’s website, while about 17,000 had no power in the West Midlands, more than 700 had no power in the East Midlands and more than 600 were without power in Wales.

As of 8am, 147,983 properties had been restored across the South West, Midlands, and South Wales.
