Leeds United's Charlie Crew makes 'inconsistency' admission after Doncaster Rovers loan spells

Leeds United youngster Charlie Crew has reflected on his loan spells at Doncaster Rovers

Leeds United midfielder and former Doncaster Rovers loanee Charlie Crew has admitted to being inconsistent across recent seasons.

The 20-year-old has been on the books at Elland Road since 2022, when he was lured from Cardiff City’s academy.

He helped Doncaster clinch the League Two title in his first loan spell away from West Yorkshire, but a second stint in Grant McCann’s squad did not work out.

Crew is now back in the fourth tier, on loan at Walsall, and has missed just one of their 12 league games this season.

Charlie Crew on ‘inconsistency’

Reflecting on his recent career trajectory, Crew told The Express & Star: “Just inconsistency within myself really, inconsistency in performances and inconsistency in the amount of minutes that I was getting.

“That's down to me to change it and hopefully this season I can with hard work and games like this today, going for the full 90 minutes and really showing that I'm consistent in performances in and out of possession.

“It's a great place for that next step, with the belief that the gaffer puts into everyone, but especially me. It's definitely a place where I feel that I can progress and I'm enjoying my football a lot.”

Charlie Crew’s development

Crew has already been capped by Wales at senior level and is evidently a player with potential. Time is on his side at 20, although he faces quite the battle to break into the Leeds squad.

When the midfielder saw his second Doncaster spell brought to an end, Rovers boss Grant McCann claimed time away with Wales Under-21s had not helped him.

He said: “Charlie has been stop-start. The international breaks haven't helped him, going away two or three times. And he probably just hasn't got to the levels he showed last year.”
