Barnsley FC confirm Boston United loan move for ex-Motherwell and Blackburn Rovers defender Georgie Gent
Barnsley have confirmed a fringe defender has made a loan move to the fifth tier of English football
Barnsley have allowed outcast defender Georgie Gent to join National League outfit Boston United on a short-term loan deal.
The 22-year-old arrived at Oakwell in the summer of 2024, making the move from Blackburn Rovers after a loan spell in Scotland with Motherwell.
He has since made 36 appearances for the Reds, but just six of those came in his second season at the club. The left-back has not been afforded a single outing since the return of Daniel Stendel to the helm and he has now been allowed to depart on a temporary basis.

Barnsley defender heads out on loan
Gent will spend a period 28 days with Boston, who sit 15th in the National League table.
A spokesperson for Barnsley said: “Barnsley Football Club can confirm that full-back Georgie Gent has joined Boston United on a 28-day loan.
“The 22-year-old, who joined the Reds from Blackburn Rovers in 2024, heads to the National League side as he continues his development and builds game time. Everyone at Barnsley FC wishes Georgie the very best during his time with Boston United.”
Georgie Gent’s relegation to periphery at Barnsley
Gent was used sparsely by Conor Hourihane after recovering from an injury last season and the now-former Barnsley head coach spoke candidly regarding the defender’s lack of action.
In April, he said: “Georgie has played a couple of 21s games. And look I think I've seen a little bit of a clamour, and people kind of need to understand the context around things behind closed doors that they don't see. There's a certain application; a certain standard that you need to meet every single day.

“You need to train properly, you need to turn up on time; you need to apply yourself properly to get in the squad and to get in the team. And for me, Georgie, over these last few weeks, hasn't met that.
“So, he's been told. Other people have been told along the course of the season, it doesn't mean that the door's closed on Georgie at all, but he needs to meet a standard and a professionalism that I expect from every single player.”
