Bristol City, West Brom and Manchester United men among frontrunners to join Rotherham United in summer window

Bristol City, West Brom and Manchester United men are among frontrunners to join Rotherham United in the summer transfer window.

Rotherham have flown out of the traps in the summer window, making 10 new signings as they prepare for life back in League One. They have been shopping in the free agent market but have certainly not made compromises on quality.

Among those to have been recruited are former Miller Jonson Clarke-Harris, a lethal forward at League One level. Cameron Dawson and Reece James have been signed from Sheffield Wednesday, while League One winners Joe Rafferty and Sean Raggett have arrived from Portsmouth.

Such is the extent of Rotherham’s ambition, it does not appear implausible that more new faces could walk through the door at the New York Stadium. With that in mind, here are the players Sportscasting believe are most likely to join the Millers this summer.

Matty James - 5/1

The experienced midfielder is a familiar face in South Yorkshire, having had two loan spells at Barnsley. A cultured midfielder with a wealth of experience, he was released by Bristol City at the end of the season.

Yann M’Vila - 13/2

Rotherham are not usually in the business of signing former France internationals but at 34, M’Vila could potentially be willing to take a step down. He ended the season at West Bromwich Albion having joined on a short-term deal.

Will Fish - 8/1

Now 21, Fish has had loan spells at Stockport County and Hibernian but appears no closer to a breakthrough at Manchester United. A commanding centre-back who can also play out with comfort, he could be a coup for a League One club.

Luke Thomas - 9/1

Once considered among Leicester City’s most exciting prospects, Thomas has seen his stock drop over the last 12 months. It has probably not fallen low enough for a League One move, but he would certainly be a shrewd addition for an ambitious third-tier outfit.

Zak Swanson - 9/1

Perhaps a more realistic full-back target, Swanson was part of the Portsmouth side that lifted the League One title last season. His former Pompey teammates Joe Rafferty and Sean Raggett have already moved to the New York Stadium.

Joe Hugill - 11/1

Manchester United fought off stern competition to sign the forward in 2020 but he does not appear close to breaking into the senior side. A fresh start away from Old Trafford could potentially prove beneficial.

Ben Killip - 12/1

He acted as Barnsley’s understudy goalkeeper last season, deputising for loanee Liam Roberts. He will once again have a fight on his hands at Oakwell this term following the arrival of Jackson Smith from Walsall.

Sammy Braybrooke - 12/1

A gifted young midfielder, Braybrooke’s development at Leicester City has been slowed by injury. He needs minutes and a loan switch to the EFL could give him what he needs.

Ciaran Clark - 16/1

The veteran defender barely featured at Stoke City last term and could be tempted by minutes in League One if he cannot find them in the Championship.
