'Been eating away at me' - Dion Charles makes admission after ending his Huddersfield Town goal drought

Dion Charles conceded his goal drought had been “eating away” at him after finally opening his Huddersfield Town account.

The 30-year-old joined the Terriers from Bolton Wanderers in January, crossing the League One rivalry divide in a reported £750,000 move.

He has struggled in front of goal in West Yorkshire and prior to last night’s Vertu Trophy win over Mansfield Town, had not scored in 27 appearances for Huddersfield.

However, a brace in the 3-1 victory over the Stags gave the Northern Ireland international - and former FC Halifax Town loanee - a much-needed boost.

He told the club’s media channels: “I’m delighted I’ve got off the mark finally. It’s been a long time coming. I’m delighted for all the lads.

“We set targets this season and winning tonight was a bit step in the right direction for us.

“We know results haven’t gone our way recently but that will give us some confidence going into Saturday.

“I am constantly working, wanting to get better and practicing my finishing. I was quietly confident that given an opportunity, getting a chance, I would put it away, and luckily I’ve got two tonight.

“The first goal for the club took quite a while. It had sort of been eating away at me a little bit. But being a striker, that is what you’re paid to do – put the ball in the back of the net.

“I have done it all my career so I knew, sooner or later, I would get a chance. Thankfully, it has gone in now and I can kick on and show everyone what I can really do.”

Josh Feeney also got in on the act as Huddersfield snapped a five-game losing streak under the lights at the Accu Stadium.

Lee Grant’s men will return to League One action on Saturday (November 8), hosting Plymouth Argyle.
