Leeds United cult hero linked with emotional homecoming with talks over move from D.C. United 'underway'

Former Leeds United star Mateusz Klich is reportedly in talks over an emotional return to Polish outfit Cracovia.

The midfielder started his career with Cracovia in his native Poland, leaving in 2011 to join Wolfsburg in Germany.

After spells in Germany and the Netherlands, Klich sought pastures new in England with Leeds in 2017.

He may not have hit the ground running at Elland Road but became a regular fixture following the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa as manager in 2018.

The 34-year-old proved to be a great fit for Bielsa’s high-octane style and was key as the Whites secured promotion to the Premier League in 2020.

He made a total of 195 appearances for the club, scoring 24 goals and registering 21 assists. When he departed for D.C. United in 2023, he was given an emotional send-of by the Elland Road faithful.

According to reporter Łukasz Olkowicz, talks are being held regarding a return to Cracovia. Speaking to Polish outlet Meczyki, he said: “Yes [he will return], such talks are underway.

“This move can be made in the winter. Mateusz Klich will be 35 in six months, and he is still associated with Cracovia.”

Klich has made 70 appearances since his move the United States, scoring seven goals.

Speaking to The Athletic earlier this year about his Elland Road exit, Klich said: “I’m a smart player, I knew it was coming.

“I had a conversation with Jesse [Marsch] and he said I would be playing less. I agreed but I didn’t want to leave Leeds, so I stayed and agreed to that role. That was all good.

“But I had the opportunity to move on and play more, so I took it. That’s football, and it’s pretty simple in the end. You’re getting older, younger players come in, new managers come in and bring their own players. It’ll probably happen to me here, too. Eventually, I’ll have to move.”
